Trophy Smallmouth Bass & Deep Structure Fishing Near Auburn, NY
Book an Owasco Lake TripWhy Owasco Lake Produces Giant Smallmouth Bass
Owasco Lake is one of the Finger Lakes that consistently surprises anglers with the size of its smallmouth bass. Stretching 11 miles long and reaching depths of up to 177 feet, this lake near Auburn, NY has all the ingredients for growing trophy-class fish — deep, clear water with abundant forage, extensive rocky structure, and relatively light fishing pressure compared to its more famous neighbors. The lake's depth profile creates ideal summer and fall habitat for big smallmouth that relate to offshore structure, ledges, and deep rock transitions throughout the season.
While Owasco Lake doesn't get the attention that Cayuga or Seneca receive, the smallmouth fishing here is genuinely elite. The lake grows big fish because of its healthy crawfish and goby populations, clean water, and the kind of deep structure that allows bass to feed efficiently without heavy angling pressure pushing them around. For anglers willing to make the trip to Auburn, the rewards are significant — I caught an 8-pound smallmouth in a tournament here, and that tells you everything you need to know about the caliber of fish this lake holds.
My Experience on Owasco Lake
I've fished Owasco Lake 109 days over my career, and some of my most memorable tournament moments have happened on this water. My biggest smallmouth here went 7.9 pounds — caught during a late season tournament when the big fish were stacked up on deep structure and feeding aggressively before winter set in. That fish is one of the highlights of my competitive career, and it came from a spot I'd marked in my notes years earlier. That's the kind of payoff you get from keeping detailed records over decades of fishing.
Owasco is a deep structure lake at its core. The smallmouth here live their lives relating to rock piles, ledges, points, and depth transitions that run from 15 to 50 feet deep depending on the season. This is not a shallow-water, sight-fishing kind of lake — it's a place where your electronics matter as much as your casting ability. With my tournament-rigged Bass Cat Puma running Lowrance and Garmin LiveScope, I can put you on fish that are sitting on structure you'd never find without forward-facing sonar. It changes the game completely.
As a licensed USCG Captain with over 25 years of tournament experience, three career wins, 24 top-10 finishes, and more than $575,000 in career earnings on the FLW and MLF circuits, I bring a competitive edge to every guide trip. My 40 years of meticulous notes on Owasco Lake mean I know where the fish set up under virtually every condition. When you book a trip with me, you're fishing with someone who has caught the biggest fish this lake has to offer — and knows exactly where to find them.

Owasco Lake Seasonal Guide
Spring (April – June)
Smallmouth move from deep winter structure toward shallower rock as water temperatures rise. Pre-spawn staging areas on main-lake points and transitions are productive with jigs, tubes, and ned rigs. As the spawn progresses, fish move onto shallow rock shelves and become accessible with finesse presentations. Spring on Owasco can produce excellent numbers of quality fish.
Summer (July – September)
Summer is prime time for deep structure fishing on Owasco. Smallmouth set up on offshore rock piles, humps, and ledges in 20 to 40 feet of water. Drop shot, small swimbaits, and deep-cranking techniques produce consistent bites. The clear water and deep habitat make LiveScope an invaluable tool for locating and presenting to individual fish on structure.
Fall (October – November)
Fall is the best season on Owasco Lake. Smallmouth feed heavily before winter, and the biggest fish of the year come during the late-season push. Deep structure remains the key — bass stack up on the same rock piles and ledges but feed more aggressively on larger presentations. Jerkbaits, swimbaits, and reaction baits can trigger bites from fish that are putting on weight for winter. This is trophy season.
