Cross Lake Bass Fishing Guide

Trophy Largemouth Bass & Topwater Action on Central New York's Hottest Fishery

Book a Cross Lake Trip

Why Cross Lake Is One of NY's Best Largemouth Fisheries

Cross Lake is part of the Seneca River and Erie Canal system near Syracuse, NY, and it is one of the most productive largemouth bass fisheries in the entire state. This shallow, fertile body of water is loaded with vegetation, wood cover, and the kind of habitat that grows big largemouth bass year after year. The lake's connection to the broader Seneca River system means there is constant access to fresh forage and habitat variety that keeps the bass population healthy and growing. If you want to catch largemouth bass in central New York, Cross Lake should be at the top of your list.

What makes Cross Lake special is the combination of shallow-water cover and a thriving bass population that responds aggressively to topwater presentations. There is nothing in bass fishing quite like watching a big largemouth blow up on a topwater bait in the early morning calm, and Cross Lake delivers that experience more consistently than almost any water I fish. The weed edges, lily pads, docks, and laydowns create ambush points everywhere you look, and the bass here use all of it. My biggest largemouth on Cross Lake went 7.9 pounds — a fish that came from a spot I've been fishing since I was a kid.

My Experience on Cross Lake

Cross Lake is where it all started for me. I grew up on this lake and had a family camp here, so my connection to this water goes deeper than any other fishery I guide on. I've fished Cross Lake 316 days over my career — more than any other lake in my rotation — and I can tell you that the fishing here is as good now as it has ever been. This is a hot fishery that continues to produce quality largemouth for anglers who know where to find them and how to present to them.

Growing up on Cross Lake taught me the fundamentals of bass fishing that I still rely on today as a tournament angler. I learned to read shallow water, to understand how bass relate to vegetation and wood cover, and to trust topwater presentations when everything in you wants to pick up a finesse rod. Cross Lake rewards aggression. The largemouth here are predators that live in heavy cover and respond to baits that trigger reaction strikes — buzzbaits, frogs, poppers, and walking baits are staples in my Cross Lake arsenal.

As a licensed USCG Captain with over 25 years of tournament experience, three career wins, 24 top-10 finishes, and more than $575,000 in career earnings on the FLW and MLF circuits, I bring a lifetime of competitive knowledge to every guided trip. But on Cross Lake, I also bring something you can't get from a tournament resume — decades of personal history on this water, from childhood through today. My 40 years of meticulous notes include patterns and spots on Cross Lake that I've been refining since I was old enough to hold a rod. When you fish with me here, you're getting the full benefit of that history.

Cross Lake Seasonal Guide

Spring (April – June)

Largemouth move shallow early on Cross Lake as the dark-bottomed bays warm quickly. Pre-spawn fish stage along weed edges, docks, and channel swings before committing to spawning areas in the shallows. Jigs, spinnerbaits, and jerkbaits are productive during the pre-spawn push. Once fish are on beds, sight-fishing with soft plastics produces some of the biggest bass of the year.

Summer (July – September)

Summer is prime topwater season on Cross Lake. Largemouth set up in heavy vegetation, lily pads, and around docks where they ambush baitfish and bluegill. Early morning and late evening topwater bites are electric — buzzbaits, frogs, and poppers draw explosive strikes. During the heat of the day, flipping and pitching jigs and soft plastics into heavy cover produces quality fish that are holding tight to shade and structure.

Fall (October – November)

Fall is the best season on Cross Lake. Largemouth feed aggressively as vegetation dies back and baitfish concentrate in predictable areas. Spinnerbaits, chatterbaits, swimbaits, and topwater all produce as bass chase bait along weed edges, points, and channel swings. The fall bite windows can produce the highest-quality fishing of the entire year, with multiple fish over four pounds in a single outing. This is trophy time on Cross Lake.
