Canandaigua Lake — Challenging But Can Be Great

Canandaigua Lake is one of the most visually stunning bodies of water in the entire Finger Lakes region. Stretching 15.5 miles long with depths reaching 276 feet, this lake is known for its crystal clear water and scenic shoreline that draws visitors from across the state. But beneath that postcard-perfect surface lies a bass fishery that can produce some truly memorable days on the water — if you know where to look and how to approach it.

I'll be straight with you: Canandaigua is not an easy lake to fish. The water clarity is extreme, which means the bass see everything. Sloppy presentations, heavy line, or poorly chosen colors will get you blanked in a hurry. But that challenge is exactly what makes a great day on Canandaigua so rewarding. When you dial in the right pattern and start putting quality largemouth in the boat, you know you earned every single one of them. The lake has a solid population of largemouth bass that relate to docks, weed edges, and subtle shoreline structure, and the fish here tend to run bigger than most anglers expect.

My Experience on Canandaigua Lake

I've spent 96 days fishing Canandaigua Lake over the years, and some of my best memories on the water have happened here. One evening that stands out above all others was taking a friend out after work for a quick trip. He had never caught a bass before — not even a small one. We pulled up to a spot I had been watching, he made a cast with a drop shot rig, and the first bass he ever caught turned out to be a 6.8-pound largemouth. The look on his face was worth more than any tournament check I've ever cashed. That's Canandaigua — the lake can frustrate you for hours and then hand you a moment you'll never forget.

The key to Canandaigua is finesse. With 40 years of meticulous notes on this lake, I've learned that the bass here respond best to downsized presentations, especially drop shot rigs fished on light line around docks and isolated weed clumps. Spring is the best season on this lake, when the largemouth push shallow to spawn and become more accessible along the shoreline. The water warms slower than the smaller Finger Lakes, which extends the pre-spawn window and gives us more time to target big females in the shallows.

As a licensed USCG Captain with over 25 years of tournament experience, three career wins, 24 top-10 finishes, and more than $575,000 in career earnings on the FLW and MLF circuits, I bring a level of preparation and pattern recognition that makes all the difference on a technical lake like Canandaigua. Every trip is backed by decades of on-water data and a tournament angler's approach to finding and catching fish.

Canandaigua Lake Seasonal Guide

Spring (April – June)

The best season on Canandaigua Lake. Largemouth bass move into shallow water around docks, laydowns, and emerging vegetation to spawn. The pre-spawn period is prime time for the biggest fish of the year, as females stage on nearby breaks before committing to beds. Drop shot rigs and finesse worms are deadly during this window. The clear water lets you sight-fish beds on calm days.

Summer (July – September)

Bass move deeper and relate to weed edges, dock shade, and offshore structure. Early morning and late evening produce the best topwater action. Midday fishing requires going deeper with drop shots and small swimbaits around the thermocline. The extreme water clarity means early and late light conditions are your best friend.

Fall (October – November)

As the water cools, bass begin feeding more aggressively in preparation for winter. Baitfish schools push into the shallows, and largemouth follow. Jerkbaits and small crankbaits along rocky shorelines and points can produce fast action. The fall turnover can make timing tricky, but when you find the right water temperature, the fishing can be excellent.
